We use our waste disposals often as if they were garbage cans, capable of taking in any quantity of waste. Unfortunately, this is not valid, and it is best that you treat it with care if you want your garbage disposal to have a long life with minimal complications. Keep these things in mind the next time you go to the kitchen sink to throw them down.
Grease Grease
It's a bit frustrating this one. Disposing of grease, oils, and melted fats can be difficult because they can't go straight into your trash can. But it can have an even worse effect to dump them into your kitchen sink than just throwing them away. When the grease cools down, it often hardens, covering the entire drain. You're best off pouring the molten grease into a plastic water bottle or cup and then tossing it into your garbage can to prevent this from happening.
Fibrous Aliments
Such products can include such things as:
- Eggshells Eggshells
- Stalks of celery
- Husks of corn
- Skins with onion
Fibrous foods may get wrapped around the blades of your garbage disposal and produce a clog after a while, although they may seem harmless. In other food products, they may also get intertwined, creating even more irritating clogs.
Grounds of coffee
Although coffee grounds could potentially make your waste disposal smell better, keeping them away from your drains is best. In the curves and bends of the waste disposal and tubing, the grains begin to collect and will inevitably cause clogs.
Have you had concerns with the disposal of your garbage? If so, contact your nearest plumber to make sure that your garbage disposal does not bring these kinds of things down. While it might seem easy at the moment, down the road it is sure to lead to a headache.
