Accessibility Statement
What we have built into this site, what we know is imperfect, and how to tell us if something blocks you.

Our approach
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 at Level AA. That is the standard most commonly referenced for public websites, and it is a reasonable bar for a site whose job is to help people get a problem fixed.
Accessibility here is a build decision rather than an overlay widget. We would rather the underlying pages work than add a script that claims to fix them.
What is built into these pages
Every page uses real headings in order, so a screen reader can navigate by structure. There is one main heading per page and levels are never skipped.
Every page starts with a skip link so keyboard users can jump straight to the main content without tabbing through the navigation.
Frequently asked questions use native expandable elements, which means the answers exist in the page for assistive technology and for search engines whether or not they are visually expanded.
Interactive targets are at least 48 by 48 pixels with spacing between them, which is stricter than the 44 pixel floor the guidelines set. Form controls use a 16 pixel minimum font size, which also prevents mobile browsers from zooming unexpectedly when a field is focused.
Browser zoom is not disabled anywhere on this site. You can zoom to 200 percent and the layout will reflow rather than break.
Colour combinations were chosen for contrast, and we do not use colour alone to convey meaning. Animation respects the reduced motion setting in your operating system.
Known limitations
The map embeds on the area pages and the contact page come from a third party. We give each one a descriptive title and keep them out of the critical path, but we do not control their internal accessibility.
This site has been tested against the guidelines during the build. It has not yet been through an audit with assistive technology users, which is a different and more valuable kind of testing. That testing is worth doing and has not happened yet.
