General information, not a diagnosis

The guides and service pages on this website describe problems that are common in Las Vegas Valley properties and explain what usually causes them. They are written to help you understand what you are looking at and ask better questions.

They are not a diagnosis of your property. Plumbing symptoms are frequently produced by more than one cause, and the same symptom can mean a trivial fault in one house and a serious one in another. Nothing here replaces having someone examine the actual system.

Why we publish symptoms rather than procedures

You will notice this site tells you how to recognise problems, how to shut water off, and how to run a meter test, but it does not walk you through repairs involving gas, electrical connections, pressurised lines or your water heater.

That is deliberate. In work where the mechanism can injure you or destroy expensive equipment, a published procedure written for a general audience is a liability rather than a help, because it cannot see your specific installation. Where that line is reached, we give you the symptom and the reason to call instead.

The things this site does encourage you to do yourself, checking an aerator, finding your shutoff valve, reading your meter, breaking a salt bridge, pressing a disposal reset, are chosen because they are genuinely low risk.

Gas, electrical and water heaters

Do not attempt repairs on gas lines or gas appliances. A gas leak is a life safety emergency: leave the property, then call your gas utility and emergency services from outside.

Do not work on electrical connections to a water heater, a disposal or a pump. Water and electricity together are not a place to learn.

A water heater leaking from the body of the tank should be isolated and replaced, not repaired. Do not attempt to patch a corroded tank.

Where this site states a fact about local water, it cites the source and links to it. The hardness figures are published by the Las Vegas Valley Water District and were retrieved on the date shown on the relevant page.

Published figures can change, and utility service areas can change. If a number matters to a decision you are making, check the current figure at the source rather than relying on the date stamped version here.

Questions about drinking water safety, contaminants or public health belong with your water utility and public health authorities, not with a plumbing contractor.
