Water Softener Installation in Las Vegas

Las Vegas tap water is officially very hard at 17 grains per gallon. A softener that is sized for average American water is undersized here on the day it is installed. We size for the water that actually comes out of your tap.

Worth having ready

  • Which fixtures are affected, and whether anything else behaves differently
  • When it started, and whether it is getting worse
  • Roughly how old the house is, which narrows the likely pipe material

A water softener installation in Las Vegas means sizing the unit to 17 grain per gallon water, tying it into the main line after the pressure regulator, and setting a drain and a power source. Most whole-home installs are a same-visit job once the location is settled.

Symptoms

Signs your home is losing to Las Vegas water

  • White crust building on faucet aerators, shower heads and glass doors
  • Soap and shampoo that will not lather, and more detergent needed per load
  • Spots on glassware straight out of a dishwasher that is working fine
  • Skin and hair that feel filmy after a shower
  • A water heater that is noisier or slower to recover than it used to be
  • Fixtures and cartridges failing earlier than they should

Scope

What a softener install covers

What is included

  • Hardness test at the tap and a grain-load calculation for your household
  • Sizing the resin capacity to that load, not to a box on a shelf
  • Install on the main line downstream of the pressure regulator
  • Drain line for the regeneration cycle, with the air gap the code requires
  • Bypass valve so the unit can be serviced without shutting off the house
  • Programming the regeneration schedule to measured hardness
  • Testing before and after so the change is a number, not an impression

What is not included

  • Drinking water polish at the sink: that is reverse osmosis, a separate unit
  • Removing existing scale already inside pipes and the water heater
  • Electrical work beyond plugging into an existing outlet
  • Permits, where a jurisdiction requires one, are quoted separately

Process

How the install runs

1

Test and size

We test hardness at your tap and work out the daily grain load from household size and use. That number decides the unit, and we show you the arithmetic.

2

Pick the location

Garage, exterior wall or a loop if the builder left one. Location decides the drain run and the length of the job, so it gets settled before anything is cut.

3

Quote in writing

Scope and price go in writing before work starts. If the location forces extra plumbing, you see that on the quote and not on the invoice.

4

Install and tie in

Unit set, bypass fitted, supply and drain connected, regeneration programmed to your measured hardness.

5

Test and hand over

Post-install hardness test, a walk through of the bypass and the salt fill, and the regeneration schedule written down.

Why sizing is different in Las Vegas

Most softener sizing charts assume moderately hard water. The Las Vegas Valley Water District puts local hardness at 291 parts per million, or 17 grains per gallon, and classes it very hard. That is the number your unit has to keep up with every day.

The arithmetic is simple enough to check yourself. Water use of roughly 75 gallons per person per day, times four people, times 17 grains, is about 5,100 grains of hardness per day. A softener is picked so that it regenerates on a sensible cycle against that load rather than running constantly.

Undersize the unit and it regenerates too often, burns salt, and still lets hard water through at peak demand. Oversize it and it sits with stale resin between cycles. Sizing to the measured load is the whole job.

Where the minerals come from

About 90 percent of Southern Nevada drinking water comes from Lake Mead. The calcium and magnesium that make the water hard are carried in from the mineral dense Colorado River, which is why hardness here is a permanent feature of the supply and not a seasonal swing.

That matters for expectations. Softening is an ongoing treatment, not a one time fix. The unit trades those hardness minerals out continuously, which is why salt and a working regeneration cycle are part of owning one.

Softener, filter or both

A softener targets hardness. A whole house filter targets sediment, taste and chlorine. They solve different complaints and they are often installed together, with the filter ahead of the softener so the resin is protected.

If the complaint is scale, spotting and soap, that is hardness. If the complaint is taste or smell at the kitchen tap, a softener will not fix it and a drinking water unit is the honest answer.

On pricing: we have not published price ranges on this site, because a range we cannot stand behind is worse than no range. Scope and price go in writing before any work starts.

Straight answers

Fair questions about this work

Will softened water feel slippery?

Some people notice it, because soap rinses off instead of leaving a film. The setting is adjustable, and a unit can be programmed to leave a little hardness in if you prefer the feel.

Do I have to give up my drinking water taste?

A softener exchanges hardness minerals for a small amount of sodium. If you want the kitchen tap untouched, the cold drinking line can be left unsoftened or fed through a separate drinking water unit.

How much salt will it use?

That depends on the size of the unit and your water use. Sizing to your measured grain load is what keeps salt use sensible, and the regeneration schedule is set from that same number.

FAQ

Water Softener Installation questions

How hard is Las Vegas water exactly?

The Las Vegas Valley Water District reports 291 parts per million, which is 17 grains per gallon, and classifies it as very hard. That figure is published in the district water quality information.

What size water softener do I need in Las Vegas?

Size follows your daily grain load: people in the house, times daily water use, times 17 grains per gallon. A four person household lands near 5,100 grains a day. We test and calculate rather than guess.

Where does the softener get installed?

On the main line after the pressure regulator, most often in the garage or against an exterior wall. Some Las Vegas homes were built with a softener loop already in place, which shortens the job.

Does a softener need a drain?

Yes. The regeneration cycle discharges to a drain, and code requires an air gap at that connection. Available drain access is usually what decides the install location.

Will a softener remove existing scale in my pipes?

Not directly. It stops new scale forming. Existing buildup inside a water heater or fixtures stays until it is flushed or the part is replaced.

Do you work on all makes and models?

We service softeners across the common brands. We are not presenting ourselves as an authorised dealer for any manufacturer, and any warranty work has to go through whoever holds that warranty.
