Test before touching anything
The opening hardness reading is the baseline. Without it, nothing done afterwards can be shown to have helped.
Open up the brine tank
Bridging and mush are the two most common reasons a healthy unit stops softening, and both are visible once the tank is opened.
Run a full cycle
A manual regeneration confirms the valve moves, the brine draws and the rinse clears. Faults that hide during normal operation show up here.
Reset to real numbers
The schedule is set from the measured hardness and the current household, not from whatever was programmed when it was installed.

Why annual service is worth more here
Maintenance intervals in manufacturer documentation are generally written for average water. Las Vegas water is 17 grains per gallon and classed very hard, which means more regenerations per year and more wear on exactly the parts service is checking.
The practical effect is that a unit here reaches its first injector blockage or valve seal complaint earlier than the same unit in a softer market.
The silent failure problem
A softener that stops working does not leak, alarm or go quiet. The tank still holds salt, the display still shows a schedule, and the only symptom is scale slowly returning, which most people blame on the weather or the soap.
By the time it is obvious, the water heater and the fixtures have had months of untreated water through them. A yearly hardness test is the cheapest way to close that gap.
What you can do between visits
Keep the salt level above the water line in the brine tank, and break up any crust you can feel with a broom handle. Use a salt appropriate to your unit and avoid letting the tank run completely empty.
If spotting or soap behaviour changes noticeably, that is worth a call rather than a wait. A cheap hardness strip from a hardware shop will tell you a lot before anyone comes out.

Can I just add salt and leave it?

How often should a water softener be serviced?
Annually is the normal interval, and very hard Las Vegas water makes that more useful here than in a softer market because the unit regenerates more often.
What salt should I use?
Use the type your unit calls for. The practical rule is to keep the level above the water line and avoid letting the tank empty completely, which is when bridging tends to start.
How do I know my softener is still working?
Test hardness at the tap. A hardware shop test strip gives you a usable answer, and it is the only check that does not rely on the unit reporting on itself.
Can I break up a salt bridge myself?
