It matters for two reasons. A leak anywhere along a long private service line is invisible, because it goes straight into the ground, and the first sign is usually a water bill that climbed for no reason. And a long sewer lateral has more joints, which means more opportunities for roots and settlement.
It also means a locate is worth more here. Digging the wrong twenty feet of a long line in caliche is an expensive mistake.

Parts of this corridor were developed before sewer service reached them, so septic systems exist on some older properties, and some have been converted to sewer over the years while others have not.
