Size is a decision, not an inheritance
A tank sized for the family that lived in the house two owners ago is not evidence of anything. Household size, the number of bathrooms and whether people shower at the same time are what determine whether a tank keeps up.
If the household has spent years running out of hot water, replacing like for like guarantees another decade of the same complaint. That is worth five minutes of conversation before the unit is ordered.
Hard water shortens the clock
