How a disposal is diagnosed
Listen
Humming and silent are two completely different faults, and the noise tells us which before anything is opened.
Kill the power
At the switch and the breaker before anything goes near the chamber. This is not a step to improvise on.
Free the jam
Most jams turn free from the bottom with a hex key, and the obstruction is usually recoverable.
Reset and test
The reset button on the underside trips on overload. A silent unit is often nothing more than this.
Find the leak source
Flange, drain connection or body. The first two are repairs and the third is a replacement.
Humming means jammed, not broken
A disposal that hums is getting power, and the motor is trying to turn against something stuck. Leaving it humming is what burns the motor out, so the switch should go off immediately.
Most units have a hex fitting on the underside that lets the plate be turned manually to free the jam. With power off at the breaker, that plus removing whatever caused it resolves a large share of disposal calls.
The usual culprits are a bone fragment, a fruit pit, a bottle cap or a piece of cutlery.
The reset button nobody knows about
A disposal that is completely silent, with no hum, has very often tripped its overload protection. There is a small reset button on the underside of the unit, and pressing it restores a unit that appeared dead.
It is worth checking before a call is made. If it trips again immediately, that is a genuine fault and worth investigating.
What kills disposals here
Grease is the main one, and it is a drain problem as much as a disposal problem: fats poured down warm coat the line downstream and produce the slow drain people blame on the unit.
Running cold water while the unit works keeps fats solid so they are carried out rather than coating the pipe. Fibrous waste like celery strings and onion skins wraps the impellers, and expanding foods like rice and pasta swell in the trap.

Why does my garbage disposal hum but not spin?
It is jammed. Switch it off immediately to avoid burning out the motor, then with the breaker off the jam can usually be freed with a hex key from underneath.
