Toilet repair covers running toilets, weak flushes, rocking pans and leaks at the base. A running toilet is normally a flapper or fill valve, and a leak at the base normally means the wax seal, which is a different and more involved repair.

How a toilet repair runs
Dye test if it is running
Colouring in the tank shows within minutes whether water is passing the flapper, which is the difference between a two dollar part and a valve.
Check the fill level
A tank filling above or below its mark causes both running and weak flushing, and it is an adjustment rather than a part.
Find where a base leak comes from
Condensation, a supply connection and a failed wax seal all put water on the floor and only one of them means lifting the pan.
Check for rocking
A pan that moves has already been working the seal loose. Securing it is part of the repair, not an extra.
Test a full cycle
Flush, refill and settle, then check the tank is not creeping back up.
The running toilet is the quiet expense
A flapper that does not seat lets water pass from the tank into the pan continuously. The fill valve tops the tank back up, so nothing overflows and nothing obviously breaks. The only evidence is the water bill.
The dye test settles it in minutes: a few drops of food colouring in the tank, no flushing, and if colour appears in the pan the flapper is passing. That is a cheap part and a short repair.
Hard water is the usual culprit for a flapper that has stopped seating, because mineral deposits build on the seat that it needs to seal against.
A weak flush is usually not a weak toilet
Before condemning a toilet as a poor flusher, the rim jets are worth checking. Those small holes under the rim distribute water around the bowl, and in 17 grain per gallon water they scale up and progressively strangle the flush.
Clearing them, and confirming the tank is filling to its marked level, resolves a good share of weak flush complaints without replacing anything.
Water at the base is a deadline
If the leak is the wax seal, water is escaping at every flush, going under the pan and into the subfloor where nobody sees it. That damage accumulates quietly and gets expensive.
A rocking pan is the same problem one step earlier. The movement breaks the seal, so securing it early is much cheaper than replacing a subfloor later.

Should I just replace the whole toilet?

Can I fix the flapper myself?

Why does my toilet keep running?
Usually a flapper that no longer seats, often because hard water has built deposits on the seat. A dye test in the tank confirms it in minutes.
Why is my toilet flushing weakly?
Often scaled rim jets under the rim restricting water flow into the bowl, or a tank filling below its marked level. Both are fixable without a new toilet.
What does water around the base mean?
Most often a failed wax seal, which lets water escape at every flush into the subfloor. It needs the pan lifted and the seal replaced.
My toilet rocks slightly. Does that matter?
